Anyone can become a producer!!!

Anyone over the age of 16 may apply to join a Country Market Society if they have suitable produce to offer or if they just wish to help. The current cost is 5p for life membership! Having joined the Market Society, you are then entitled to be a member of any Country Market in Surrey.

An invoice book, all labels and packaging are available at the market to purchase. All produce and craft must be the work of the producer and be of a high standard; help and advice are offered at all markets via the Market Manager. To find out more about becoming a producer or helper at Jacobs Well Country Market contact the Market Manager.

Packaging

Packaging is available most market days. Most supplies are in our store cupboard at the rear of the stage and can be purchased whenever required.

Labelling

All items offered for sale at a Country Market must be properly labelled. The label must include the CM logo, a description of the product, the producer's number and the price as a minimum. Prices must be in red.

Food labels have additional requirements:

  • The name of the producer
  • The producer's house name or number and Post Code
  • The date on which it is sold
  • Any allergen ingredients in red
  • If the produce contains nuts, nut products (eg soya) or nut oil it must also be labelled:
    Contains Nuts
    Contains Nut Products
or Contains Nut Oil as appropriate.

All weights must be in Kilograms or Grams and these may be checked by Controllers if there is doubt. This is only a summary of the requirements, the Country Markets Handbook contains the detail.

These rules are not a whim of the Committee but are obligations under UK and EU law.

Printed labels suitable for most products are available from our store cupboard.

All cooks must have taken the Basic Kitchen Hygene Certificate and keep detailed records of ingredients and suppliers.

Special Treats

At intervals throughout the year and sales permitting, producers and helpers are given a little extra bonus. There is a Lunch, usually in February and most years we have a "Sausage and Mash" lunch in the village hall after the market. We cannot offer these specials free but they are subsidised as much as we can.
